Food Parcels – December 2011
Our first collaboration with Tiger Brands Corporate Social Investment involved a holiday food parcel distribution project to 1 200 families in Alexandra; the objective being to support these families who live in extreme poverty. It is critical to sustain the nutrition levels of the children who are fed in the school programme during the holidays as food security is a real issue for the majority living in Alexandra.
The food parcels consisted of nutritional products to offer a family of 4 a month-long source of substantive basics. A cooking/nutritional workshop was carried out on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December 2011 to educate the families on food preparation, hygiene, food purchase & planning, and nutrition.
The Foundation will be monitoring the families to track and assess the impact of this intervention; particularly to measure if the project ensures the children do not return to school malnourished.
The distribution of the food parcels was warmly received by the families and the food demonstrations proved to be informative and highly interactive.
