Tiger Brands Foundation Serving Rural Schools in Bergville, KZN

The Tiger Brands Foundation launched their in-school breakfast feeding programme in July 2011 in Alexandra, Johannesburg. With the programme running successfully in Johannesburg, the Foundation explored the expansion into more provinces.

Focussing on rural schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal, several schools were considered for inclusion. Assisted by Umlambo Foundation, Woodford Primary and Hoffenthal Primary in Bergville were selected based on their excellent management and leadership in their respective schools in the face of severe challenges.

In reviewing the implementation of the in-school breakfast feeding programme, it was decided the logistics of installing kitchen containers at both schools would be impractical and the construction of kitchens would offer optimum benefit to the schools and their communities. To this end, an agreement was signed with Project Build to construct the kitchens at the selected schools.

Project Build, a charitable trust engaged with schools through an empowerment and skills development programme, has built many schools in rural KZN over more than 30 years. Building was completed in record time and the schools welcomed in the new school year with fully equipped kitchens – stainless steel prep tables, storage facilities, running water, plastic eating utensils and denim aprons for food handlers to prepare breakfast and lunch for the enthusiastic learners.

Mr Glen commented “Working in partnership with Umlambo Foundation and Project Build ensured the Foundation could implement the breakfast programme where it was most desperately needed and in a way that works best in that particular environment”.

We are proud to announce the newly constructed kitchens were officially handed over by Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka on Friday 11 May 2012. In celebration the management, educators and learners had prepared traditional songs and dances to share this event with representatives of the Department of Basic Education, stakeholders and guests.
